The first award, Truck Innovation Award for 2019, it was noted the project MAN aFAS – an unmanned cargo vehicle to the fourth level, ensuring the safety of road works on Federal motorways. The winner in the new category were chosen by a jury of the international competition of International Truck of the Year (IToY), which included editors and journalists from prestigious European and South African magazines on commercial vehicles. The Chairman of the Board of the German company MAN Truck & Bus Joachim Drees (Drees Joachim) received the award at a meeting in Hannover press conference MANdedicated to the IAA 2018.

The award, established this year, the jury of the international competition International Truck of the Year (IToY), is awarded to companies whose technical development is aimed at implementation of innovative solutions in the industry of commercial vehicles. The Chairman of the IToY jury of Gianrico of Griffin presented the award to the Chairman of the Board of MAN Truck & Bus to Joachim Drees at the press conference, MAN Truck & Bus, which was held in the international exhibition of commercial vehicles IAA in Hanover 2018.
The abbreviation "aFAS" is used to refer to "unmanned vehicle, ensuring the safety of road works on Federal motorways". The development of innovative solutions to security challenges was conducted for four years with the support of the Federal Ministry of Economics and energy, as well as partners from different fields of industry and research activities. In cooperation with MAN Truck & Bus AG on the project aFAS worked: Federal road Agency of the German Higher school of technology and Economics of Karlsruhe, the Technical University of Braunschweig – Institute of automated control systems, as well as TRW, ZF, WABCO and Bosch Automotive Steering.

The IToY jury members were familiarized in detail with the research project aFAS in the recently held in Austria an exclusive press conference. Journalists had the opportunity to see and personally experience unmanned vehicle of the fourth level. Innovative car MAN TGM 18.340 in a fully automatic mode follows along mobile construction sites in front of the vehicle road services, to which it is connected by electronic "coupling". On the cars, ensuring the safety of road works, frequent visits that can lead to serious consequences for drivers. AFAS Autonomous MAN becomes a "safety net" for such vehicles, in case of an accident taking the hit.

Journalists were impressed by the fact that in the process of testing unmanned test vehicles pass without a single failure for more than 4 000 km on public roads. The jury praised the project for aFAS that he is able to save the lives of drivers and staff of the traffic service in serious accidents that often occur on mobile construction sites. Also, experts noted the ease of control, high active safety and the use of serial components in the system aFAS.

The President of the jury Gianrico of Griffin said: "the Project aFAS has become an effective solution for ensuring security on mobile construction sites and laid the Foundation for further research in the field of Autonomous driving".
Chairman of the Board of MAN Truck & Bus Joachim Drees added with pride: "the System was successfully tested in real conditions on the highways of the state of Hesse. We don't only talk about innovation, we implement them in life! That is why our work received the highest evaluation of the jury of the International Truck of the Year"..
