Bryansk automobile plant was established on 4 June 1958 for the production organization of special-purpose vehicles. Bezhitsk steel plant transferred to the new enterprise industrial building, which has launched serial production of industrial tractors T-140 and then the T-180 and pipelayers D-804. Tractor production continued until the second half of 1980-ies.
In August 1959 on the Basis of the organized Assembly production of the BTR-152В1 and its modifications, as well as large floating cars ZIL-485А (BAS).
In 1962, the production of special 135k wheel chassis began, and later the 135lm and 135LTM chassis were mastered in mass production. The first in-house development of the plant, put into mass production in 1966, was the 135mb chassis. In the second half of the 1960s, a batch of 135l4 chassis was manufactured for the national economy. Until the mid-1990s, BAZ produced various modifications of the 135lmp and 135MB chassis.
A new milestone in the life of the plant began in the second half of the 1960s. The base was entrusted with the creation and mass production of floating hull chassis BASES-5937, BASES-5938, BASES-5939, BASES-5921 and BASES-5922. In 1970, the development of ZIL-137-137B active road train began in mass production. in the early 1970s, the plant developed the chassis and tractors of the Osnova-1 family, which included the baz-6944, BAZ-5947 floating chassis and the baz-6950 frame chassis. In the second half of the 1980s, the Voshchina family was developed (models BAZ-69441, BAZ-6948, BAZ-69501, BAZ-6953, etc.). During this period, the total output reached 850-950 chassis and tractors per year. Produced technique has found application mainly in the Armed forces of the USSR, serving as a base for creating tactical missile complexes "Luna-M", "Tochka", "Tochka-U" tactical missiles "Oka", "Oka-U", coastal missile complex "Redoubt" anti-aircraft missile complex "OSA" of various modifications, reactive system of volley fire "Hurricane", complexes of unmanned aerial vehicles "Reis", "Reis-D", points, command and control in the complex "Maneuver" as well as other complexes and systems of armament and military equipment (AME). In just 50 years, the plant has produced more than 25,000 pieces of equipment commissioned by the Ministry of defense. In addition, BAZ produced components for ZIL-131 cars: drive axles, transfer boxes, balance suspensions, etc. (they were produced up to 55 thousand sets annually).
In the late 1980s, the era of conversion began. Since 1989, work has been underway in Bryansk to create a new production facility focused on the annual production of up to 40 thousand 1.5-ton vans. However, after the termination of financial support for this project from the state in 1994, the production of cars was carried out using a bypass technology, and in total 157 BAZ-3782/BAZ-3783 vans were manufactured in 1994-1996. Limited circulation, high cost and the start of production of "Gazelles" in Nizhny Novgorod did not allow Bryansk low-tonnage companies to gain a foothold in the market, so in 1996 the project was curtailed. In addition, the produced auto units were also unclaimed due to the termination of the production of ZIL-131 trucks by AMO ZIL. All this, as well as a decrease in orders by more than 10 times from the Ministry of defense, put the Bryansk automobile plant in a difficult situation, and in December 1996, the bankruptcy procedure of the enterprise began.
In 1993, according to the tactical and technical task of the Ministry of defense of the Russian Federation, the Base began the most extensive work in the entire history of the plant – the creation of a family of special wheeled chassis and high-terrain wheeled tractors of the 4th generation "Voshchina-1". The first prototype of the BAZ-69091 was manufactured in February 1995. Due to limited funding from the Customer and the difficult situation of the company, the work on creating the family was delayed for 10 years. Only in 2003-2004, the chassis and tractors of the Voshchina-1 family with the 6x6 and 8x8 wheel formula were accepted for the supply of the Russian Armed Forces. However, in 1996, on the basis of the "Voshchina-1" family, the production of national economic modifications of chassis and tractors began, and today only for the economic sector, 12 serial complete sets with wheel formulas 8x8, 10x8, 12x12 are manufactured.
In 2001, the Bryansk automobile plant became a partner of the Independent Association of machine builders (NAMS). Thanks to this, the production of military automotive equipment was revived (serial production of the "Voshchina-1" family began), in 2004 the first special crane chassis KSH-8973 was produced for a 100-ton truck crane, and in 2006-2007 two prototypes of special crane chassis BAZ-8027 were manufactured for 32-ton cranes, one of which had all-wheel steering (4x4x4). In 2007-2008, three - and four-axle special crane chassis were launched on KAMAZ units. In 2009-2014, small - scale Assembly of three-and four-axle crane chassis of the series was carried out 8031/80311/8033 with a support-running frame, nodes and units of Chinese (including the cabin) and Russian production. Three-axle General-purpose chassis BAZ-7941 with a spar frame were also manufactured, which in the future were planned to be used for mounting a wide range of specialized superstructures (cranes, concrete mixers, dump trucks, etc.). However, the crisis of 2008-2010 in the Russian economy did not allow to fully implement the planned plans to increase the production of crane chassis, and then the collapse of the ruble in 2014 forced to completely abandon the production of crane chassis on Chinese units.
At all times, the Base paid special attention to improving military vehicles. In 2007, standard tests were carried out that confirmed the possibility of increasing the load capacity of the base chassis BAZ-6909 (wheel formula 8x8) of the "Voshchina-1" family to 22 tons. the FAMILY included the baz-6403 (8x8) truck tractor and a special crane chassis BAZ-6909.8 (8x8). In February 2011, the BAZ-6403.01 tractor truck was manufactured with an overall width of 3.1 m. in may of the same year, a prototype of the baz-69096-013 chassis with a 10x10 wheel formula was released. In 2013, the line of military products has expanded the so-called "equipped chassis", which is created on the basis of the family "Wax-1" that remained in Bryansk automobile plant position the country's only manufacturer of such equipment, as much as possible adapted for mounting systems and VVT systems. In the autumn of 2014, the first model of the BAZ-6909.60 (10x10) chassis with a width of 3100 mm passed preliminary tests. if necessary, a chassis with a 12x12 wheel formula can be introduced into the "Voshchina-1" family (the version for the national economy – BAZ-69099). This allows us to say that Russia has fully domestic off-road vehicles for military and dual-use in the class of load capacity up to 40-45 tons.
In the autumn of 2015, the Bryansk automobile plant became a part of JSC Concern VKO Almaz-Antey. During 2016, the first investments were made in the reconstruction of production, the company started building its own factory automotive testing ground for vehicles. The State defense order was fully fulfilled by the efforts of factory specialists. In 2016, BAZ produced 266 units of chassis and tractors, which is 73.9% more than in 2015, when 153 units of equipment were collected (according to JSC "ASM-holding").
Currently, the military-purpose chassis and tractors produced by the base are intended for use in various air defense systems and systems, including s-400 anti-aircraft missile systems, Gamma-S and Nebo-M radar systems, Krasukha-2 electronic warfare stations, and others, as well as advanced air defense systems and systems.
At the Base, work is underway to create a new generation of special wheeled chassis and tractors, as well as special crane chassis, for which it is planned to develop new cabins for both military and civil purposes.
"Civil" versions of special wheeled chassis and wheel tractors of the Bryansk automobile plant BAZ-69095 (6x6), BAZ-690902 (8x8), BAZ-69096 (10x8), BAZ-69099 (12x12), BAZ-64022 (6x6), BAZ-6403 (8x8), BAZ-64031 (8x8), BAZ-6307 (8x8), BAZ-69098 (8x8) are unified with models of the family "voshchina-1".
Chassis with a load capacity from 14.7 to 40 tons are most in demand as a base for mounting various bodies and superstructures used by enterprises working in the field of mining. These are installations for hydraulic fracturing, repair and drilling units, mobile drilling rigs, cementing complexes, off-road fuel tankers of large volume, etc.
The BASES ' ballast tractors can be used for towing trailers or aircraft at airfields, and are equipped with universal on-Board platforms, including crane-handling units. The permissible weight of a towed trailer on paved roads is 50 tons, and on all types of roads and terrain – 15 tons.
Truck tractors (the permissible load on the SSU from 12 to 20 t) can be used for towing semi-trailers, including foreign production, which can carry various heavy equipment. The total weight of the road train can reach 90 tons.
Special crane chassis BAZ-69098 is designed for installation of a 50-ton crane.
Chassis and tractors are equipped with 8-cylinder V-shaped diesels that develop power up to 500 HP, produced by Avtodizel (YAMZ) and TMZ. The transmission is 9-speed manual. Independent torsion bar suspension or combined balance-torsion bar suspension (depending on the model and configuration). A tire pressure control system has been installed.
Due to the expected decrease in the State defense order, the Base is adapting existing chassis to the private requirements of customers in the economic sector, as well as developing new chassis to meet the individual requirements of oil, gas and other consumers.
Special crane chassis, developed by specialists of the Bryansk automobile plant, differ from similar General-purpose chassis characteristics primarily by using a support frame instead of the classic spar. Thanks to the integration into a single structure, the support frame is more rigid, technological and lightweight, better adapted to the placement of various crane equipment. In addition, it provides the crane with a reduced center of gravity.
Special crane chassis BAZ-69098 appeared in 2000. This chassis interested customers who operate cranes in difficult road conditions. The BAZ-69098 chassis is unified with the "Voshchina-1" family of chassis based on the aggregate base and cabin. The car is equipped with a V-shaped "eight" YAMZ-7511 with a capacity of 400 HP, which is aggregated with a 9-speed manual transmission. The suspension is an independent two-torsion bar, with shock absorbers, it is possible to regulate the air pressure in the tires. Today, this is the main model of the crane chassis BASES.
Since the end of 2006, a special three-axis (6x4) crane chassis BAZ-8029 WAS also manufactured on the Kama aggregate base for the installation of 25-ton Ivanovets cranes. In 2007, it was supplemented by a four-axle (8x4) modification of the BAZ-80291 for a 50-ton crane. Both chassis were equipped with KAMAZ diesels of various models (depending on the configuration of the chassis, engines of Euro-2 and Euro-3 standards were installed, with a capacity from 240 to 280 HP) and a KAMAZ-6520 cab, as well as Kama gearboxes and axles. Chassis configurations were also developed with Cummins engines. However, in 2009, due to problems with the supply of automotive components manufactured by KAMAZ, the production of the BAZ-8029 and BAZ-80291 chassis was discontinued.
Production of the ksh-8973 five-axle chassis for the KSH-8973 100-ton crane was stopped at the end of 2012 due to the lack of demand for 100-ton cranes in the Russian construction market.
In connection with the revival of business activity of builders, the Bryansk automobile plant is considering various options for creating new models of special crane chassis. A number of works are already underway with Russian crane plants.
