The Italian company ASTRA Veicoli Industriali was founded in 1946 as an enterprise for the repair of army vehicles. In 1955, it produced its first civilian vehicle, the two – axle all-wheel drive VM-1 dump truck. Now the company produces cross-country vehicles for the armed forces, quarry and articulated dump trucks and road two -, three-and four-axle chassis with reinforced undercarriage, used mainly in construction and mining. In 1986, ASTRA Veicoli Industriali became part of the international truck manufacturer Iveco S. p. A., from which it began to receive part of the components, including engines and axles. Nevertheless, it has retained the specialization of the manufacturer of equipment for difficult operating conditions. The Astra machinery plant is located in the province of Piacenza, 160 km from Milan. The area of the enterprise is more than 140 thousand m2. Every year, it produces 1.5-2 thousand cars. Up to 30% of the products are exported, and about the same amount is supplied by NATO orders. The Astra chassis differs from the similar Iveco Trakker chassis with more massive frame spars, reinforced suspension, modified engine settings, and gearboxes with a reduced gear ratio in the drive axles. In addition, Astra cars are equipped with original cabins. Since 2012, the company has launched a new HD9 family with an updated cab exterior with improved heating and ventilation systems, more ergonomic seats with air suspension. This family of chassis and tractors with wheel formulas from 4x2 to 8x6 is produced on a par with the previous HD8 family and equipped with Iveco Cursor engines with a working volume of 8.0 and 13.0 liters, with a capacity from 410 to 560 HP, meeting the environmental standards of Euro-5. A wide range of MCP and ACP is offered for them. The Astra product line also includes four models of RD series dump trucks with a 4x2 wheel formula and engines from 353 to 653 HP; the ADT series consists of four models of articulated dump trucks with a 6x6 wheel formula and engines from 319 to 455 HP.; reinforced HHD8/9 6x6 series and special multi-axis chassis for installation of various settings (concrete pumps, mobile drilling rigs, etc.), designed both for movement on public roads and for work in off-road conditions. Astra trucks officially debuted on the Russian market for the first time in 2005 and were modified in accordance with the peculiarities of operation in our country. In 2015, 7 new HD series cars were imported, in 2016, Astra cars were not imported, but in 2017, the owner of Astra has a lot of plans-to create an Astra-AMT series adapted for harsh Russian operating conditions, including, first of all, an 8x4 chassis, as well as 6x6 and 8x6 with an increased load on the driving axles, so the rear truck must take a load of up to 43 tons, and the total weight of the dump truck reaches 63 tons (subject to operating speed restrictions). In addition, imported Astra-AMT chassis will be fitted with Miass-localized dump trucks. In the longer term, Astra-AMT intends to even push a number of popular brands, such as BelAZ, in the "easy-career" segment.
In addition to road models, Astra offers on the Russian market a small 32-ton dump truck RD32C. the Total weight of the dump truck is 54 tons, the body volume is 15.8 ("with a cap" - 20.1 m3).
The base is 5850 mm. the Cursor 10 Engine has a volume of 10.3 l and a capacity of 381 HP of the TIER 3 environmental standard.
The new Astra HD9 family of vehicles, which can be used on public roads, as well as the previous HD8, includes three-and four-axle chassis and tractors with full or rear-wheel drive. Both families are equipped with a modern in-line 6-cylinder Iveco Cursor 13 (F3B) diesel engine with a volume of 12.8 liters, depending on the modification, developing a power of 410, 440, 480, 520 and 560 HP and corresponding to Euro-5 environmental standards. A 16-speed manual or 12-speed ZF automatic transmission is aggregated with it. The basic version has a short daytime cab (an extended cab with a sleeping compartment can be installed on request), the minimum ground clearance is 379-404 mm. the suspension is fully spring-loaded, and the braking system is more efficient due to the use of the Iveco Turbo Brake.
Three-axle chassis. The total weight of the THREE-axle hd8/ HD9 chassis is 41 t. the wheelbase of the chassis ranges from 3200-4500/ 1450 mm, the useful length of the frame is from 5.05 to 6.35 m.
Four-axle chassis. The distance between the second and third bridges of the chassis with the wheel formula 8x4 and 8x6 depending on the modification varies 2350-4100 mm and a useful length of the frame is 6.1–8,15 m. the Maximum value of the specified spacing of chetyrehosnuju with all-wheel drive is from 2850 to 3960 mm and the effective length of the frame – from 6.6 to 8 m. the total mass of the four-axle Astra reaches 50 tons.
Truck tractor. The Astra HD8 three-axle tractor can work as a part of a road train with a total weight of up to 104 tons. the Modification with a drive for two rear axles is offered with a wheelbase of 3200/ 1450 mm and 3500/ 1450 mm, and the all-wheel drive modification - with a wheelbase of 3500/ 1450 mm and 3800/1450 mm. the height of the first hitch is 1514 mm, the second is 1572 mm.
Since the end of 2017, the Assembly of Astra dump trucks with the Russian package (also includes the Arctic package for temperatures of -60°C) is going to be mastered at the AMT joint venture in Miass under the Astra-AMT brand.
In our country, dump trucks are delivered on the Astra HD9 chassis (6x4, 6x6 and 8x4) and reinforced HHD9 6x6 (with single-and double-pitched rear axles) for particularly severe operating conditions, equipped with 12.8-liter Iveco Cursor 13 diesels with power from 410 to 540 HP and 16-speed manual ZF transmissions. Some of them are equipped with bucket (produced by cantonie And other companies), others – box-shaped dump bodies of rear unloading with a heated exhaust gas bottom, the volume of which when installed on three-axle chassis is 16 m3, when installed on four-axle chassis-20 m3. For the HHD9 series, respectively, 20 and 22 m3. The load capacity of HD9 trucks ranges from 23,000 to 33,000 kg, while HHD9 trucks range from 30,500 to 34,500 kg.
