Sales of full-size MPVs (MPV) in Europe for 2018 has decreased by 30%, and they decreased sequentially in each quarter of last year. As a result, European family and the rental company has purchased less than 100 000 units of the full-sized MPV, which accounted for only 0.6% of the total car market, compared to 0.8% in 2017 and 1% in 2016, i.e. the current result was the lowest in this segment at least for the last two years in this decade. Besides the future of the segment looks very bleak, as fewer manufacturers see sense to fight for a shrinking like shagreen leather segment, well, 7 seater crossovers continue to destroy its direct competitors MPV, although the latter are still much more economical and practical. All six remaining in this segment players show double-digit percent losses, and only three of them have implemented more than 20 000 units.

Leadership in the segment holds the Ford S-Max, but he lost a third of its sales compared with the 2017 year.

Ford Galaxy

Its less dynamic and more spacious sibling, the Ford Galaxy was a bit better, losing "only" 23% and even slightly increased its share, but nevertheless, last year was the worst for both of Ford models, starting with 2015, when their current generation only came out on the market.

The Volkswagen group dominates this segment with two of his "dinosaurs", who took respectively 2nd and 3rd places. Along a single-platform minivans Volkswagen Sharan and Seat Alhambra is 46.6% of the segment, which is 0.6 percentage points higher compared with the 2017 year and 5 percentage points compared with the year 2016.

And this despite the fact that both of these models to date are the oldest in the segment – they were launched a series of 2010 and were last updated in 2015.

However, each of them sold roughly twice as good as the Renault Espace, which became the biggest loser in the segment for the second year in a row and both times with the loss of 32% or more. The pioneer of the minivan market in Europe barely managed to beat Ford Galaxy with a margin of only 55 units.

In 6th place was the most dynamic model that is superior to all others in the segment in 2018, but still remains a niche player with a share of only 1.6% – a Korean SsangYong Rodius, Stavic he.

In 2019 in the segment MPV is not expected any major news, except for some technical updates such as, new engines for Renault Espace, but Volkswagen did not disclose any plans about when it will be replaced with minivans, if at all. And, that's by far the Ford Motor plans to kill the future of its minivans S-Max and Galaxy.

It should be noted that the segment of minivans in the United States (482 185 units), where they originated in 1983, still reigns a budget model MPV a decade ago – Dodge Caravan/ Grand Caravan (151 927 units, +21%), and three of the five remaining players each sold better than the entire segment MPV in Europe.

PS In Russia, the MPV segment is almost non-existent, so in total a new "full-size" minivans in 2018, we had sold only 435 units. of which 307 units (+17,2%) of the minivan business class Toyota Alphard.
