On the territory of the state of Hesse in Germany from may 7 2019 year there is a stretch of road for testing in real conditions of trucks with pantographs the pantographs, drawing power from the contact of the air outlet. In the tests involved hybrid trucks Scania, is able to run on electric, and diesel fuel.

Length eHighway is only 5 km, but will soon increase significantly

Test section "of electroautomate" with a length of 5 km located on the A5 motorway between Frankfurt am main and Darmstadt. On the extreme right lane in each direction of the section of highway set supports from the overhead grid. Hybrid Scania trucks can travel on conventional roads on the usual diesel fuel, and at the entrance on the main strip with contact electricity grid – the so-called eHighway, is easy to move to electric. The driver receives information about that section of the road equipped aircraft electrical line from the sensor and by a simple button press raises the pantographs mounted on the roof of the cab of the truck. When connecting to the wires of the pantograph electricity begins to flow directly to the electric motor while simultaneously charging the battery. After the Congress with eHighway electric motor also can work from batteries, and only after the exhaustion of its charge, the truck will go to the main diesel fuel. Today trucks electric vehicles capable of speeds up to 90 km/h.

I wonder how it will be combined with the contact network for the transport of dangerous and oversized cargo?

Because modern vehicles with internal combustion engines (not just automotive) is one of the main sources of atmospheric pollutants in the world is actively developing vehicles that run on electricity. Scania for many years investing in the development of solutions for the electrification of transport.
Executive Vice President at Scania, research and development, Klas Eriksson says: "the Company is considering an electric road as one of the promising technologies. Electrification of vehicles is developing quickly, and due to its environmental, social and economic benefits it will play an important role towards the realization of sustainable development concept, which adheres to the Scania."

The first experiments on the creation of trucks with pantographs Scania and Siemens began in 2012

Technology electrificatio highways, developed by Siemens, ensures not only the absence of exhaust gases and noise reduction, but also allows truck owners to save on fuel. Additional option of charging the car while driving reduces the idle time of transport to charge the batteries.
In the summer of 2019 will be launched on an electrified stretch of the autobahn A1 to the port of lübeck. Another plot will be laid in Baden-württemberg in the Federal road B462 in the beginning of 2020. In total, Scania will offer three electrified highways of Germany 15 experienced truck tractors..
