In the framework of the IAA’in Frankfurt, 2017, Samsung SDI demonstrated a prototype of a new traction battery, based on batteries of standard 21700. In the numerical designation traditionally contained information about size: the diameter of a single battery is 21 mm, length — 70 mm.

In General, the standard 21700, there is nothing new: the very same Samsung SDI, which is specializing in the battery unit of the Samsung Group, introduced him back in 2015. But then you were supposed to use it in electric motorcycles. Then business was entered by Tesla: she started to produce batteries at its Gigafactory 1. New batteries already installed in the "affordable" electric car Model 3, which in small quantities are harvested from the end of July.

According to representatives of Samsung, 20 universal modules, each of which used a few dozen batteries 21700 able to give a homogenized electric premium range of 600-700 kilometers. Affordable and massive machines, you can use 10 modules that will allow you to drive about 300 miles between charges.

It turns out that one module provides about 30-35 kilometers. One of the advantages of these units is the scalability: manufacturers of electric cars will be able to choose the optimum number of batteries for each model.

Battery the new standard is planned to produce at the new plant of Samsung SDI in Hungary, as well as existing factories in South Korea and China. At the moment the company is one of the four leading manufacturers of traction batteries, along with Panasonic, LG Chem and AESC.
