the Company Volkswagen will export a new compact crossover, developed under the internal name "folks-SUV" or "folk crossover" from Mexico to the United States, said Volkswagen CEO office Mr. Herbert dies.
In the line of Volkswagen's new crossover will be positioned below the Tiguan model. The new product is designed for global markets, except Europe, where such a niche in the lineup (more compact than the Tiguan) will implement a model of T-Roc, featuring smaller dimensions and a lower roofline, which gives it a more sporty look.
"The purpose of VW is to sell worldwide in the year 400 000 crossovers of this model," – said Mr. Diez at a press conference in the headquarters of Volkswagen group in Wolfsburg.
Subcompact crossover VW T-Roc will appear in Europe and only in Europe at the end of 2018.
He stressed that the new crossover will be a global model, aimed at meeting the growing demand for compact SUVs and crossovers, as well as to help meet more stringent standards to reduce emissions of CO2 that different regulators impose on automakers in many markets of the world. "Folk crossover" will initially be produced at the Chinese-German joint venture SAIC-VW, since August this year. And, by 2020, car production base will be expanded to Mexico, Russia and Argentina.
"Deliveries to the US market will be from Mexico," said Diez. However, he did not give dates of commencement of sales in the U.S. market.
Director of sales Department of Volkswagen jürgen Stackmann in turn, said: "This crossover will be slightly more compact than the Tiguan. While we call it "folks-crossover", but, of course, the production model will have a different name, because it will turn from a regional to a global project."
In early March, Volkswagen has approved the concept of the compact SUV, which is based on the VW MQB platform with the front a transverse engine.
Influence of China on the global auto industry
New subcompact crossover will be the first model of the Volkswagen brand in China, the sales of which will start outside of the country. Earlier, in 2016, China was released mid-size sedan VW Phideon. It was intended for export, but Volkswagen decided then and there that this model is not sufficient demand on the world market, is able to justify the adaptation of the sedan, for example, the requirements on passive safety in the United States, as China adopted a completely different standard of conduct the crash tests.
And yet China is already affecting the strategy of the world's leading automakers. For example, a convertible two-seater and coupe is gone from the line VW and many other autoproduction because of the fact that the Chinese buyers do not want to buy such models, as it is not suitable for heavily polluted cities of China. Mercedes-Benz originally designed their current flagship S-class sedan with a long wheelbase and today half of the volume of sales of this model comes from China.
Also, just recently, Volkswagen have equipped the Touareg crossover of the next generation of powerful chrome grille it to the tastes of Chinese customers, who do not consider a more discreet design is expressive enough to demonstrate their wealth.
the Invasion of SUVs continues
The VW brand continues to strengthen the offensive in the highly profitable and fast-growing category of SUV segment. To achieve these goals, the range of SUVs and crossovers will be expanded to 20 models by 2020, and as expected, they will provide to German concern to this date not less than 40% of total global sales.
This week in China will be presented an updated version of the flagship SUV Touareg. New subcompact crossover T-Roc should appear on the European market before the end of this year.
Mr. Diez stated that: "By 2020 almost in all regions of the world, we will double the offer SUV".
The VW brand is not only to increase sales in the SUV segment, but also enhances the development of electric cars, and unmanned and other digital technologies, which are major factors in the market in the next few decades.
