English Nissan Sunderland plant celebrates another record-breaking milestone – the release from the conveyor 10 millionth car.
To achieve the cherished figures of the plant took 33 years, which is quite a landmark made it the most high-performance car plant in the UK. This also means that, on average, a new car rolled off the production line in Sunderland every two minutes from the start of production in 1986.
Vice-President for manufacturing Nissan Sunderland Steve Marsh, said: "the Production of ten million vehicles is a huge achievement for everyone associated with the plant. The achievement of this huge numbers required all the ingenuity, dedication and courage of our skilled workers and engineers, many of whom come from the North-East of England. We are all determined to continue to raise the standards of quality that our customers expect during the last three decades."
The ten millionth car was a Nissan Qashqai Tekna in the color Vivid Blue, complete with "autopilots" technology ProPILOT controlling direction, acceleration and deceleration within a single lane on the highway and heavy traffic on the roads and when driving on motorways. Innovative crossover also became the most mass model of the plant, as it accounts for more than 3.4 million of the number of manufactured machines. On the second most popular car produced in Sunderland – Micra, we have about 2.4 million copies.
The Qashqai crossover is one of nine basic models, which were produced at the factory ever since the first Bluebird sedan rolled off the Assembly line in 1986 (the first year produced only 5139 machines), and one of the three that are produced at the factory currently, along with the LEAF EV and the Juke SUV. Last year, for example, the Juke circulation exceeded one million, and the old model Primera was the only that reached a seven-figure release with a little less than 1.5 million.
The Nissan Sunderland plant was built on the site of a former airfield. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in July 1984. The total workforce at that time was 470 people, compared to 7,000 today.
